Senior Vice-President, Private Investments

 

With more than 20 years experience in executing investment transactions, André is responsible for leading private equity investments in the CPP portfolio.

 

Prior to joining CPP Investment Board, André managed a combined private equity portfolio in excess of $3 billion in financial services, telecommunications, media and entertainment sectors for another Canadian pension plan manager.

 

Before entering the private equity space, André spent several years with a leading telecommunications company mostly as a senior officer responsible for corporate development and legal affairs.

 

André started his career as a corporate lawyer with a major Canadian law firm and then a consultant for a European merger & acquisition consulting boutique. He earned his degrees from the London School of Economics and the University of Ottawa.

Alain Carrier

Alain Carrier
Managing Director (Europe), Private Investments

Alain provides leadership for the CPP Investment Board’s Private Investments department in Europe. Based in London, England, he also assists in the overall development of the CPP Investment Board’s activities in the broader EMEA region.

Alain has more than 15 years of financial industry experience. Prior to joining CPPIB, Alain was most recently Managing Director at Goldman Sachs & Co. in their Investment Banking division in New York and London. Prior to that, he was an Associate at the New York-based law firm, Sullivan & Cromwell.

He holds a Bachelor of Laws from Laval University in Quebec City, a Masters in Law (D.E.S.S.) from the Sorbonne in Paris and a Masters in Law from Columbia University.

John B. Breen
Vice-President and Head of Funds & Secondaries

John leads the growth of global private equity fund activities in the Private Investments Department. 

John has more than 25 years of experience in corporate finance and private equity, most recently as a Managing Partner of MWI Partners, a private equity fund based in Toronto. He has also held a number of senior positions for CIBC in Chicago, New York and Toronto, including his position as a founding member of CIBC Wood Gundy Capital, a leading Canadian merchant banking operation. Mr. Breen has also served on a number of Boards of Directors of both public and private corporations, including AltaGas Income Trust, a Canadian energy services business. He has also been active in charitable organizations such as the Foundation Fighting Blindness.

John holds a B.Comm (Honours) from Queen’s University.

Jennifer Kerr

Jennifer Kerr, Senior Principal

Prior to joining CPP Investment Board in December 2004, Jennifer worked at MWI & Partners, a Canadian middle market buyout fund, and Merrill Lynch & Co. in investment banking in Toronto and structured finance in London.

Suyi Kim, Senior Principal

Suyi was most recently at Teachers' Private Capital working on investment commitments in Asia, Europe and the U.S. Prior to that, she was with The Carlyle Group Asia LBO fund, McKinsey & Co. and Pricewaterhouse Coopers in Asia.

She holds an MBA from Stanford and a BA from Seoul National University. She is also a Certified Public Accountant.

Stephanie Leaist

Stephanie Leaist, Senior Principal

Prior to joining the CPP Investment Board, Stephanie was principal of Ludwick & Leaist Inc., a corporate communications firm and Lexacom Capital Corporation. She also practised corporate/commercial and securities law with McCarthy Tétrault, and earned her Chartered Accountant designation with Coopers & Lybrand.

Stephanie holds her B.Comm. and law degrees from the University of Toronto.

Jennifer Morais, Senior Principal

Prior to joining CPP Investment Board in October 2005, Jennifer worked at OMERS Capital Partners in private equity. She also worked at CIBC World Markets and at Hatch Associates, a management consulting firm.

Julie Gray, Principal

Prior to joining CPP Investment Board in September 2007, Julie was a project leader at The Boston Consulting Group. During her time at BCG, Julie focused on corporate growth and turnaround strategies primarily in the financial services and consumer good sectors and worked with the firm in Canada, the US, the UK and Latin America.

Julie holds a Bachelor of Commerce (First Class Honours) from Queen’s University and an MBA from INSEAD.

  Jim Fasano
Vice-President and Head of Principal Investing

Jim is responsible for CPPIB’s direct investments in private equity. He joined the CPP Investment Board in 2004 and has been a member of the Principal Investing group since its inception.

Prior to joining CPPIB in 2004, he worked in the Investment Banking group at Merrill Lynch & Co., focusing on companies in the media and telecommunications sectors. Previously, he was a member of the Mergers & Acquisitions group at RBC Capital Markets and a Commissioned Officer in the Canadian Armed Forces.

Jim holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from the Royal Military College of Canada and an International Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business.

He currently serves on the boards of IMS Health, LHP Hospital Group and AWAS Aviation Capital.

Peter Chen, Senior Principal, Hong Kong Office

Peter is responsible for leading the private equity principal investing activities in Asia.

Peter joined CPPIB from Bain Capital, where he was Principal and a founding member of Bain Capital Asia. He was previously General Manager at General Electric Corporate Financial Services in Taiwan with Greater China leadership responsibilities.

Peter received his MBA from Harvard Business School, and BSBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill including Japanese studies at Keio University in Tokyo.

Jeff Donahue, Senior Principal

Jeff is responsible for developing and leading the private equity principal investing activities focused on extraction industries including oil and gas and mining.

 Prior to joining CPPIB, Jeff was Vice President, Strategy and Business Development at BHP Billiton PLC in London.  Previously, he had a range of senior corporate development roles at Enron Corp and spent several years as both an investment banker and consultant to natural resource companies.

Jeff holds an undergraduate degree in applied mathematics from Harvard University and an MBA from the University of Chicago.

Tony Morgan, Senior Principal

Prior to joining CPPIB, Tony was a Partner at private equity firm Alchemy Partners in London. Previously, he was Investment Manager at Permira in London and spent several years as a management consultant with Mitchell Madison Group.

Tony holds a Master's of Business Administration from Harvard Business School where he was a Fulbright Scholar and an M.Eng in Manufacturing Engineering from Cambridge University.

Graeme Bevans
Vice-President and Head of Infrastructure

Graeme is responsible for leading the development of the infrastructure portfolio in the Private Investments department.

Prior to joining CPP Investment Board, he was most recently the head of infrastructure at Industry Funds Management (IFM), an investment funds management company, and Executive Director at Copernican Securities, both located in Melbourne, Australia.

Graeme has over 25 years of international experience in corporate banking and infrastructure investing.

Prior to joining the CPP Investment Board in February 2007, Alan worked as a member of Macquarie Bank Limited’s corporate finance team in Toronto. Previously, he worked with ING Barings in Amsterdam, and with McCormick Rankin, an engineering consulting firm, in Toronto.

Alan holds an M.B.A. from Nijenrode University, and a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from Queen’s University. He is also a registered professional engineer.

Prior to joining the CPP Investment Board in October 2007, Bruce led the private markets infrastructure team at OPTrust. Previously, he spent a number of years working with Macquarie Bank in London and Toronto in corporate finance after having worked in investment banking at RBC Dominion Securities.

Andreas Koettering

Prior to joining the CPP Investment Board in October 2008. Andreas worked for twelve years in investment banking for Citigroup and Schroders, providing M&A and capital markets advice to clients in the infrastructure and utilities sectors. He also held positions as principal investor at Siemens in Hong Kong and Germany, and as project finance banker at Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) in Frankfurt.

Andreas graduated from the London School of Economics with a Bachelor of Science (Econ) and went on to obtain an M.Sc. in Agricultural Economics and a D. Phil., both from Oxford University.

Mark oversees the CPPIB's multi-faceted global private debt investment program. Most recently, he was Managing Director, Co-Head of Leveraged Finance Origination and Execution for Barclays Capital in New York. Prior to that, he spent over 10 years at Goldman Sachs & Co. in senior positions within Fixed Income and Financing Groups in New York. He also held senior finance roles at Laidlaw Inc.

Mark holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Queen’s University and is a Chartered Accountant.

  David Allen, Senior Principal

Prior to joining the CPP Investment Board, David was a partner and portfolio manager at GoldenTree Asset Management.  David founded and ran GoldenTree’s London office and was responsible for their European investments.  Prior to that, David worked at Morgan Stanley for 10 years where he worked in their Mergers and Acquisitions department, Investment Banking in Hong Kong and finally in Fixed Income, where he was Associate Director of High Yield Research and a multi-year Institutional Investor All-Star analyst in the Media, Satellite and Cable sectors.

Andrew Edgell 

Andrew Edgell, Principal

Prior to joining CPP Investment Board, Andrew was Vice-President in the private debt and special opportunities fund at Fortress Investment Group in Toronto. Previously, he was a Vice-President with KPMG Transaction Advisory.

Adam Vigna, Principal

Prior to joining the CPP Investment Board in February 2009, Adam was a Vice President at Goldman, Sachs & Co. in the Americas Special Situations Group (“AmSSG”) in New York and Toronto.  In this role he was responsible for the group’s Canadian energy effort focusing on both debt and equity investments.  Before joining AmSSG, Adam worked in Goldman’s Investment Banking Division in New York where he was a part of their Financial Institutions Group (“FIG”).
